{"id":1600,"date":"2021-05-22T09:33:53","date_gmt":"2021-05-22T03:33:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/financialherald.net\/?p=1600"},"modified":"2021-05-22T09:33:53","modified_gmt":"2021-05-22T03:33:53","slug":"momen-to-cnn-rozina-islam-will-get-fair-judgement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/financialherald.net\/?p=1600","title":{"rendered":"Momen to CNN: Rozina Islam will get fair judgement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Staff Correspondent<\/p>\n<p>Bangladesh has an independent judiciary, assures Foreign Minister Dr Momen.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on Friday said journalist Rozina Islam will get fair treatment and judgement, emphasizing that Bangladesh\u2019s judiciary is very independent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBangladesh\u2019s judiciary is very independent, she [Ms Islam] will get fair treatment, and judgment \u2026 We don&#8217;t want anyone to suffer,&#8221; he told CNN in a live interview, mentioning that it is a legal issue and they do not intend to interfere in it.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Momen said there is law in the country and they honour the law, and that is why they do not want to talk about it much since it is in the court. \u201cRozina Islam will get a totally fair judgment \u2026 no doubt about that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, Dr Momen said it is very regrettable what happened to journalist Rozina Islam and the government has nothing to hide.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s very regrettable. The government of Sheikh Hasina is a media-friendly one. We have nothing to hide. I know as the Foreign Ministry, we have to face it. Many will raise questions. We don&#8217;t want such incidents,&#8221; Dr Momen said.<\/p>\n<p>He appreciated the role of the media in unearthing many stories, including the pillow saga and Shahed Karim issues.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The government has taken actions (after those stories were published). You (the media) help the government. You\u2019re part of the government. You\u2019re helping us (the government) much. We thank you,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Momen referred to what ruling Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif said on Wednesday and appreciated Hanif&#8217;s remarks.<\/p>\n<p>Hanif said the incident that took place at the Secretariat with journalist Rozina Islam was undesirable and that the country would benefit if strict action was taken against the corrupt instead of filing cases against journalists.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Momen said this should have been handled by the Health Ministry.\u00a0 Referring to what his other colleagues said, Dr Momen assured that Ms Islam will get justice.<\/p>\n<p>Rozina Islam is accused under sections 3 and 5 of the Official Secrets Act and sections 379 and 411 of the Penal Code, for allegedly attempting to \u201ccollect sensitive government documents and taking photos of them\u201d at the Health Ministry.<\/p>\n<p>On May 18, a magistrate court turned down the police\u2019s request for a five-day remand and instead sent her to jail.<\/p>\n<p>Rozina was confined to a room for nearly six hours as she went to the Health Ministry on May 17, during which she had fallen ill and fainted. She was then taken to Shahbagh police station.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, the Human Rights Watch (HRW) said Bangladesh authorities should drop all the &#8220;oppressive charges&#8221; against renowned journalist Rozina Islam.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Islam\u2019s colleagues believe she was detained over her reports on corruption and mismanagement in the public health sector, including the government\u2019s response to the Covid-19 pandemic, said the HRW.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Staff Correspondent Bangladesh has an independent judiciary, assures Foreign Minister Dr Momen.
