It was the Covid-19 pandemic since early 2020 that caused a considerable drop in shrimp exports from Khulna to Europe.<\/p>\n
The situation started to revert in late last year, but only for a couple of months when Russia launched special military operations in Ukraine in February this year.<\/p>\n
During the period, both the volume of exports and the prices have fallen significantly, triggering frustration among exporters, farmers and workers.<\/p>\n
The export of shrimps to Russia and Ukraine has remained stopped for the last seven and a half months.<\/p>\n
Exports to other European countries have also declined.<\/p>\n
At the same time, the price of shrimp in the European market has decreased, causing trouble for the exporters.<\/p>\n
Bangladesh exported 731 tonnes of shrimp worth around Tk58.44 crore to Russia in FY21.<\/p>\n
But the exports came down to 240 tonnes, around Tk20.26 crore in FY22, according to sources at the Fisheries Inspection and Quality Control (FIQC) office in Khulna.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, shrimp exports to Ukraine in FY21 amounted to Tk11 crore for 119 tonnes, but dropped to Tk3.21 crore in the following year.<\/p>\n
Humayun Kabir, vice president of Bangladesh Frozen Foods Exporters Association (BFFEA), said: “The export of shrimp to Russia and Ukraine has remained suspended due to the war. The pandemic and the war have negatively impacted shrimp exports.<\/p>\n
“As a result, those involved in the industry are not doing well. Due to the loss, many people are abandoning shrimp farming and have turned to white fish. Many farm owners have lost capital and changed sector for a living.”<\/p>\n
BFFEA director Rezaul Haque said that the war has had a negative impact on the economy of the European countries.<\/p>\n
Khulna Divisional Pona Bebosayi Samity General Secretary Golam Kibria Ripon said that shrimp farmers were in extreme trouble due to the Russia-Ukraine war after the Covid shutdown. Shrimp production has also decreased during the time.<\/p>\n
Ripon is an award-winning shrimp farmer in Paikgacha Upazila. Khulna FIQC Deputy Director Md Abu Sayeed acknowledged the fall in shrimp exports.<\/p>\n
He added that the Department of Fisheries was actively monitoring the overall situation and taking steps for increasing export earnings. “We’re also working to ensure that the exporters are not affected,” said the official.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
