{"id":915,"date":"2021-03-09T09:12:02","date_gmt":"2021-03-09T03:12:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/financialherald.net\/?p=915"},"modified":"2021-03-09T09:12:02","modified_gmt":"2021-03-09T03:12:02","slug":"3-protesters-killed-as-myanmar-workers-go-on-strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/financialherald.net\/?p=915","title":{"rendered":"3 protesters killed as Myanmar workers go on strike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8216;Over 50 people killed by security forces so far&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Three anti-coup protesters were shot dead in Myanmar on Monday as demonstrators across the country sought to paralyse the economy with strike action following a weekend of night raids and arrests.<\/p>\n<p>The country has been in turmoil since a February 1 coup ousted civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi and triggered mass protests against the new military junta.<\/p>\n<p>The police and military have responded with an increasingly brutal crackdown on demonstrators, with more than 50 people killed and nearly 1,800 arrested.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the risk, protesters rallied in parts of the commercial capital Yangon, the second-largest city Mandalay and other towns around the country. In some areas, the authorities once again responded with force.<\/p>\n<p>In the northern city of Myitkyina, security forces used tear gas and opened fire during street clashes with stone-throwing protesters.<\/p>\n<p>A live Facebook stream of the incident showed protesters dragging multiple wounded demonstrators away by the arms and legs.<\/p>\n<p>Tear gas and fire extinguisher gas float around demonstrators as they run away from police during a protest against the military coup in Naypyitaw on March 8, 2021 Reuters<\/p>\n<p>There was also grisly footage of bleeding bodies lying on beds as health workers frantically tried to resuscitate them.<\/p>\n<p>One man was also seen lying face down, with part of his skull blown out.<\/p>\n<p>A poignant image in local media showed a Catholic nun in a white habit on her knees in the street, pleading with police to show restraint.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Two men were shot dead on the spot, meanwhile three others including a woman were shot in the arm,&#8221; a medic told AFP.<\/p>\n<p>A third protester was shot dead in the town of Pyapon in the Irrawaddy Delta region, an eyewitness and a rescue official told AFP.<\/p>\n<p>In Yangon, security forces raided the office of independent media outlet Myanmar Now.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I can confirm that our office was raided in the afternoon yesterday by a group of soldiers and police,&#8221; editor-in-chief Swe Win told AFP.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They took desktop computers, parts of our data server and a printer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>General strike call<\/p>\n<p>Banks, stores, shopping malls and some clothing factories were closed following an appeal by trade unions for a general strike to bring the economy to a standstill.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To continue economic and business activities as usual&#8230; will only benefit the military as they repress the energy of the Myanmar people,&#8221; 18 unions said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The time to take action in defence of our democracy is now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Unions are seeking to ramp up an ongoing &#8220;Civil Disobedience Movement&#8221; \u2013 a campaign urging civil servants to boycott working under military rule \u2013 which has already hit state machinery hard.<\/p>\n<p>The impact has been felt at every level of the national infrastructure, with hospital disruptions, empty ministry offices, and banks unable to operate.<\/p>\n<p>The junta has warned that civil servants &#8220;will be fired&#8221; with immediate effect Monday if they continue to strike.<\/p>\n<p>After a restless night with security forces sent to multiple neighbourhoods and shots heard in some areas, parts of Yangon woke on Monday to police preemptively breaking up protest barricades.<\/p>\n<p>Physicians for Human Rights said it was appalled by security forces occupying public hospitals, calling the move a violation of international law<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One eyewitness account detailed armed security forces entering and seeking to occupy West Yangon General Hospital by force,&#8221; the group said, adding it had reliable information that five other Yangon hospitals were being occupied and similar situations elsewhere in Myanmar.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Even though medical personnel vacated their government posts to initiate the civil disobedience movement, many returned to government hospitals in response to escalating violence against peaceful protestors.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>State-run media confirmed the hospital takeovers.<\/p>\n<p>International pleas<\/p>\n<p>The coup and subsequent crackdown have drawn widespread international condemnation as well as sanctions against key military personnel.<\/p>\n<p>Australia&#8217;s Foreign Minister Marise Payne announced late Sunday the country was suspending its defence cooperation programme with Myanmar, which included English language training.<\/p>\n<p>Canberra is reviewing its aid programme so money is channelled away from government agencies towards not-for-profit organizations.<\/p>\n<p>The military, which denies responsibility for loss of life in the protests, has defended seizing power by alleging widespread electoral fraud in November&#8217;s elections, which Suu Kyi&#8217;s party had won in a landslide.<\/p>\n<p>The Nobel laureate has not been publicly seen since she was detained as the lightning coup was launched in the early hours of February 1.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8216;Over 50 people killed by security forces so far&#8217; Three anti-coup protesters were shot dead in Myanmar on Monday as demonstrators across the country sought to paralyse the economy with strike action following a weekend of night raids and arrests.
