77 fatalities reported while 5,343 new infections logged in 24 hours
Bangladesh has reported 77 deaths from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, the highest daily figure since the pandemic began, as the government plans to enforce another weeklong lockdown with stricter rules from April 14.
With the latest figure, the number of total fatalities rose to 9,661 till Saturday morning.
On March 5, 2021, the 7-day moving average of deaths in Bangladesh was 6.57 — the lowest since May 2020. After May 27 last year, when the 7-day rolling average was 22.57, the number began to increase gradually.
Fewer than 40 days have passed since March 5 and on Saturday, the 7-day moving average stood at 64.
Besides, the country logged more than 678,000 Covid-19 cases with 5,343 people testing positive in the 24-hour span.
With the fresh infections, the number of total confirmed cases jumped to 678,937, according to the daily virus update released on Saturday afternoon by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Health authorities on Wednesday recorded the highest number of new Covid-19 cases (7,626) in a single day since the pandemic made landfall in the country in March last year. However, the number dropped to 6,854 on Thursday.
Deaths
Of the 77 deceased on Saturday, including 53 men and 24 women, 51 were from Dhaka division, 15 from Chittagong, three from Rajshahi, four from Rangpur, two from Khulna, and one each from Sylhet and Barisal divisions.
All of them died in different hospitals across the country.
So far, 7,226 men (74.80%) and 2,435 women (25.20%) have died from Covid-19 in the country.
The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.42%.
As many as 26,077 samples were tested in 243 labs across the country in the past 24 hours. The latest figures show an infection rate of 20.47%.
A total of 4,973,489 samples have been tested in the country, leading to an overall infection rate of 13.62% so far.
Amid the backdrop of a resurgence of Covid-19 deaths and cases, Bangladesh will go into a week-long hard lockdown starting from April 14, aimed at curbing Covid-19 transmission, since the existing lockdown has proven to be ineffective to restrict public movement.
The DGHS said 3,837 people had recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.
So far, 572,378 patients – 84.30% – have made full recovery across the country.
Global Situation
On March 8 last year, the health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain named Sars-CoV-2. The country recorded its first fatality on March 18.
The novel coronavirus broke out in China’s Wuhan city in late December 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.
The fast-spreading coronavirus had claimed more than 2,931,627 lives and infected at least 135,440,480 people across the world till Saturday afternoon, according to Worldometer.
As many as 108,988,059 people have recovered from Covid-19, which has spread to 219 countries and territories across the planet.
