Khaleda’s travel abroad: All eyes on government

Her physical condition is now stable, but medical board suggests her treatment abroad

The medical board formed for BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will decide the next course of action once the government allows her to travel abroad for better treatment, says her personal physician Prof Dr AZM Zahid Hossain.

“The matter is at the hand of the government… When the decision comes, the medical board will decide the next step in this regard,” he said on Friday while updating the media about Khaleda, now being treated at Evercare Hospital in the capital for her post-Covid-19 complications.

Her condition was stable, he said, and avoided a direct answer when asked if Khaleda was in a condition for air travel. “The medical board will decide the next step in this regard once her travel is cleared by the government,” he said.

Last week, family members of the former premier and the BNP secretary general met the home minister to discuss the matter of her treatment abroad.

While several ministers said that the government would consider the plea positively, Information Minister Hasan Mahmud labeled the move as politically motivated. He said that she could be treated in Bangladesh, as the treatment of Covid-19 is the same everywhere around the world.

Nearly four weeks after contracting Covid-19, Khaleda’s test returned negative on Thursday, according to party sources.

Law Minister Anisul Huq said on Thursday that they had received the document from the Home Ministry and would look for provisions to ease the conditions of Khaleda’s release from prison.
