37 deaths and 1,682 new infections reported in the last 24 hours
Bangladesh registered 37 deaths from Covid-19 in the 24 hours to Friday morning, taking the total number of deaths in the country to 11,833.
The latest single-day death toll is the lowest since March 29, when health authorities recorded 45 deaths. On March 28, the daily Covid-19 death toll was 35.
The country also logged a total of 770,842 coronavirus cases with 1,682 people testing positive over the past 24 hours.
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) revealed the latest figures on Covid-19 in the country through a press release on Friday.
Of the 37 deceased – 23 men and 14 women – 19 were from Dhaka division; 11 from Chittagong; two each from Rajshahi and Sylhet; and one each from Khulna, Barisal, and Mymensingh divisions.
Of them, 28 patients died in government hospitals, eight in private hospitals, and one at home.
Twenty of the deceased patients were aged above 60, 11 between 51 and 60, five between 41 and 50, and one aged between 31 and 40. So far, 8,589 men (72.59%) and 3,244 women (27.41%) have died from Covid-19 across the country. Since the beginning, 6,879 people have died in Dhaka division, 2,175 in Chittagong, 619 in Rajshahi, 718 in Khulna, 358 in Barisal, 409 in Sylhet, 430 in Rangpur, and 245 in Mymensingh.
The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.54%. The health authorities said 2,178 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.
So far, 704,341 patients – 91.37% – have made full recovery across the country. As many as 17,013 samples, including the pending ones, were tested in the 443 authorized labs — government and private — across the country.
The latest figures show an infection rate of 9.89% which was lower than Thursday. The overall infection rate of the country stands at 13.77%.
Currently, 18,903 people are in isolation and 48,367 are quarantined.
As of Friday, another 43 people got the first dose, taking the total number of first doses to 5,819,854. While 102,915 got the second dose during the same time, taking the total vaccinated to 3,313,424.
On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.
The novel coronavirus broke out in China’s Wuhan city in late December, 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.
The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 3,271,664 lives and infected 156,757,954 people across the world till Friday afternoon, according to Worldometer.
As many as 134,153,319 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 220 countries and territories across the planet.
