Commuters finding it much more convenient to cross the Padma River with 12 ferries operating on the Shimulia-Banglabazar route
The pressure of homebound people at the Shimulia ferry terminal in Munshiganj has eased considerably after the huge rush over the past few days.
Commuters found it much easier to cross the Padma River with 12 ferries plying the Shimulia-Banglabazar route on Tuesday.
Passengers reached the wharf on foot as police and Border Guard Bangladesh personnel were halting all private cars at the multiple checkpoints on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway.
Sirajul Kabir, in-charge of the Mawa Naval police outpost in Munshiganj, said patrols have been intensified in and around the ferry terminal area.
A total of 12 ferries are plying the Shimulia-Banglabazar route on Tuesday There aren’t more than five hundred passengers at the wharf at a time,” he added.
Md Hilal Uddin, Mawa traffic police inspector, said the ferries are mostly carrying ambulances, hearses and freight trucks, and there weren’t any private cars at the wharf.
A huge rush of home-goers was witnessed at the ferry terminal over the past few days, as people determined to spend Eid holidays with family members continued leaving Dhaka despite the unimaginable hassles and health risks.
The government enforced movement restrictions from April 6, extended in several phases, in the face of a surge in Covid-19 infections in the country.
In the latest instance, the restrictions were extended until May 16.
