The government is not exempting any police officers and is monitoring everyone closely, says the minister
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said that steps will be taken to reform RAB after reviewing the US report.
He said this in a reporters’ briefing after a program at Hotel Sonargaon in the capital on Sunday.
“We are always reforming. We are modernizing everything,” he said.
The home minister said: “RAB is an elite force. We give them some special duties from time to time. They work according to the principles. Nobody who has done wrong can be escaped. We are monitoring everyone personally.”
“We are also checking the US report whether they are mistaken or not,” he added.
When asked about the position of the government in terms of reforms and accountability, the home minister said that many police and RAB members are in jail. If anyone commits any crime, they will not go unpunished. “We are not exempting anyone,” he said.
Earlier on Saturday, the newly appointed Director General (DG) of RAB, M Khurshid Hossain said that RAB does not need reforms. “We do not operate outside the law. There are rules and regulations governing RAB. The elite force is run as per the rules,” the new RAB chief had told reporters.
When asked about US Ambassador Peter Haas’s advice on reforming RAB, Khurshid said the elite police unit did not do anything illegal and it had not received any proposals on reforms from the US.
M Khurshid Hossain took charge as the new DG of RAB on September 30.
