CEC: Decision on EVM not influenced by political parties

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal has said the Election Commission made the decision of using Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) without being influenced by the political parties.

He was speaking to the reporters at the Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital on Wednesday morning. The CEC said: “We took the decision of using EVM so that political parties are not involved in counting votes. In this way, fair voting would be possible.” He added that millions of voters come to vote and using EVM eases the process of voting and vote counting.

“The decision to use this technology came after a lot of assessment. Opinions of various groups, technical experts and all groups of the commission was taken before finalizing the use of EVM,” he said. Habibul said: “We have decided unanimously, for the time being, we will use EVM in 150 seats.”

The decision was taken on Wednesday over voting for 150 seats with EVM after a lot of assessment, he added.

He urged everyone to wait and see for themselves if the EVM works properly now and in the future.
